No need to stayA neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck. It involves tightening the underlying muscles, removing excess skin, and sometimes reducing fat deposits to create a smoother, firmer, and more youthful neck contour. This surgery is particularly effective for individuals experiencing sagging skin, jowls, or a “turkey neck” appearance due to aging, weight loss, or genetics.
People who notice that their neck appears older or less defined than their face may be good candidates for a neck lift. This procedure is ideal for healthy men and women, typically between the ages of 40 and 70, who have loose skin, muscle banding, or excess fat beneath the chin. It is also suitable for those who have undergone facial rejuvenation but still feel that their neck reveals signs of aging.
A neck lift is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The surgeon makes incisions either behind the ears and under the chin or along natural skin creases to minimize visibility. Through these incisions, they tighten the neck muscles, reposition or remove fat, and trim away excess skin. In some cases, liposuction is also used to sculpt the area further. The incisions are then closed carefully to allow for discreet healing and optimal aesthetic results.
A neck lift effectively targets several concerns, including sagging neck skin, excess fat under the chin, visible neck bands caused by weakened platysma muscles, and poorly defined jawlines. It enhances the neck’s contour, provides a more youthful silhouette, and restores balance between the neck and face. For individuals unhappy with the contrast between a rejuvenated face and an aging neck, this procedure offers significant improvement.

Recovery from a neck lift typically takes one to two weeks, though some swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks. Patients are advised to keep their head elevated, avoid twisting or bending the neck excessively, and follow post-operative care instructions closely. Most individuals return to normal activities within 10 to 14 days, although complete healing may continue over a few months as the tissues settle and scars mature.
While a neck lift cannot stop the natural aging process, the results are long-lasting, often maintaining a more youthful appearance for 10 years or more. Over time, some degree of skin laxity may return, but the improvements made during surgery will still provide a more refined contour than before the procedure. Lifestyle choices such as sun protection, a healthy diet, and not smoking can help prolong the effects.
As with any surgical procedure, a neck lift carries certain risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, numbness, asymmetry, and complications related to anesthesia. However, these risks are minimized when the procedure is performed by an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon. Thorough preoperative evaluation and proper post-operative care also contribute to a safer experience and better outcome.
