2-3 DaysPer Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat conditions like achalasia, where the muscles of the esophagus fail to relax. POEM uses an endoscope passed through the mouth to cut the inner muscle layer, improving food passage without external surgery.
POEM is best suited for patients with achalasia, esophageal spasms, or other motility disorders who suffer from difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or regurgitation. It is especially helpful for those who want a non-surgical and precise treatment option.
Under general anesthesia, a thin endoscope is inserted through the mouth. A tunnel is made in the esophageal wall, and the tight inner muscle (lower esophageal sphincter) is carefully cut. This allows food to pass more easily into the stomach.

The POEM procedure uses high-definition endoscopes, electrocautery tools, and CO₂ insufflation for safety and precision. Since it’s done internally, the outer layers of the esophagus remain untouched, leaving no visible scars.
The procedure takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Most patients are monitored in the hospital for 1–2 days and can resume normal diet in stages. Full recovery is usually fast, with noticeable symptom relief within a week.
POEM is considered very safe, but may cause side effects like temporary chest pain, gas, or acid reflux. Rare risks include bleeding or perforation, which are usually manageable with endoscopic techniques.
