What is Gamma Knife Surgery?

Gamma Knife surgery is an advanced, non-invasive procedure that uses precisely focused beams of radiation to treat abnormalities in the brain. Despite its name, no scalpel is involved. Instead, over 190 beams of low-dose radiation converge on a single target, delivering a powerful therapeutic dose to a specific area while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This outpatient procedure is often completed in a single session and is known for its precision, safety, and quick recovery time.

What’s the Difference Between Frame and Frameless Gamma Knife?

Gamma Knife surgery can be performed using two methods of head stabilization: frame-based and frameless. In the frame-based approach, a lightweight metal head frame is temporarily secured to the skull to provide the highest level of precision. In the frameless approach, a custom-fitted mask and advanced imaging technologies are used to keep the patient’s head still without the need for pins. Both techniques are highly accurate, and the choice depends on the treatment area, duration, and individual patient needs.

What Happens During Gamma Knife Surgery?

The procedure begins with imaging—typically an MRI or CT scan—to precisely map the target area in the brain. Once the treatment plan is created, the patient is positioned using either a frame or mask, and the Gamma Knife machine delivers focused radiation beams to the targeted area. The process is painless, and patients remain awake throughout. Treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes and 2 hours, after which patients are monitored briefly and typically discharged the same day.

What Happens After Gamma Knife Surgery?

Recovery after Gamma Knife is usually quick and straightforward. Some patients may experience temporary fatigue or mild headaches, but most resume normal routines within a day or so. Because Gamma Knife treatment works over time, follow-up scans are scheduled over several months to monitor changes in the treated area. The full benefits of the procedure—such as tumor shrinkage or seizure relief—can take weeks or months to become apparent, depending on the condition being treated.
