What is Capsule Endoscopy?

Capsule endoscopy is a modern diagnostic technique that uses a small, pill-sized camera to take thousands of pictures as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract. This capsule transmits images to a wearable recorder and is especially helpful for examining the small intestine, which is difficult to access with traditional endoscopy or colonoscopy.

When is Capsule Endoscopy Recommended?

Doctors recommend capsule endoscopy when patients have unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, suspected small intestine tumors, Crohn’s disease, or chronic iron-deficiency anemia. It is also helpful for evaluating celiac disease and polyps when standard imaging fails to find the cause of symptoms.

How the Procedure Works

The patient swallows a capsule the size of a large vitamin. Inside the capsule is a tiny wireless camera that captures images as it moves naturally through the digestive tract. These images are sent to a small recorder worn around the waist or chest. After the procedure, the capsule is passed painlessly in the stool and is discarded.

Preparation Before the Procedure

Before the test, patients are usually advised to fast for several hours and may be given a laxative to ensure a clear view inside the intestines. What Happens After Swallowing the Capsule?

After swallowing the capsule, the patient wears a recording device for about 8 hours. During this time, the capsule moves through the digestive system, taking images at a rate of about 2–6 frames per second. After the procedure, the recorder is returned to the doctor for image analysis, and the capsule is naturally excreted without any discomfort.
