No need to staySclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins and small varicose veins, primarily on the legs and sometimes the face. It involves injecting a special solution, known as a sclerosing agent, directly into the affected veins. This solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse, seal shut, and eventually fade as the body naturally absorbs the treated vein. The treatment is safe, efficient, and typically done in an outpatient setting without anesthesia.
Spider veins develop when tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin dilate and become visible. This condition can result from various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, obesity, prolonged standing, or age-related vein weakening. Though generally harmless, spider veins can cause cosmetic concerns, as well as mild symptoms like burning, itching, or aching sensations, which is why many individuals choose to treat them.
During sclerotherapy, the doctor uses a fine needle to inject the sclerosing solution into the targeted veins. The procedure takes approximately 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. After the injection, the veins may initially appear red or irritated, but this subsides as the veins close off and are reabsorbed. Compression stockings may be applied to promote healing and improve results.
Recovery from sclerotherapy is typically quick and uncomplicated. Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately, although it's advised to avoid strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure for a few days. Wearing compression stockings for a week or two helps reduce swelling and improves the chances of complete vein closure. Mild bruising or discoloration around the treated area is common but usually fades within a few weeks.
Sclerotherapy is generally well tolerated. The injection itself may cause a slight stinging or burning sensation, but the discomfort is minimal and short-lived. Some patients may experience temporary tenderness or swelling at the injection site. Since anesthesia is not required, the procedure is considered virtually painless for most individuals.

Sclerotherapy is ideal for individuals with spider veins or small, uncomplicated varicose veins who are in otherwise good health. It is not recommended for pregnant women, people with active blood clots, or those with certain allergies to the sclerosing agent. A consultation with a vein specialist helps determine eligibility and expected outcomes based on individual vein anatomy and health history.
Sclerotherapy is highly effective in treating spider veins, with many patients seeing 50–80% improvement after just one session. While some veins may require multiple treatments, the overall success rate is high. Treated veins typically disappear within three to six weeks, although larger veins may take longer. Maintenance treatments may be needed over time, especially if new veins appear.
