0-1 DayBalloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis. This technique involves inserting a small, flexible balloon catheter into the blocked sinus passage. Once correctly positioned, the balloon is gently inflated to widen the sinus opening, allowing for proper drainage of mucus and restoring normal sinus function. It’s an alternative to traditional sinus surgery and is known for causing less tissue damage, reduced bleeding, and a quicker recovery.
Balloon Sinuplasty is typically recommended for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis who have not found relief from medications like antibiotics, nasal sprays, or decongestants. Chronic sinusitis can cause persistent nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headaches, postnasal drip, and decreased sense of smell. When medical therapy fails to resolve these symptoms, balloon sinuplasty offers a safer and simpler surgical option.
The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, often in an outpatient setting. A thin wire is guided into the sinus cavity using an endoscope. A balloon catheter is then advanced over the wire and inflated to gently restructure and expand the sinus opening. Saline may be used to flush out mucus or pus. After the procedure, the balloon is deflated and removed, and the sinus passage remains open without the need for any cutting or removal of bone or tissue.
Recovery from balloon sinuplasty is generally quick, with most patients returning to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. There may be mild nasal congestion, drainage, or discomfort for a few days. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty rarely requires nasal packing, which greatly improves post-operative comfort. Follow-up visits are scheduled to ensure healing and effectiveness.
The key benefits of balloon sinuplasty include its minimally invasive nature, lower risk of complications, less bleeding, and faster recovery time. Since no tissue is removed, the procedure preserves the natural structure of the sinuses. Patients typically experience lasting relief from sinus symptoms without the trauma associated with conventional sinus surgery.

Although balloon sinuplasty is considered safe, there are minimal risks like infection, minor bleeding, tissue damage, or recurrence of symptoms. In rare cases, patients may require a more traditional sinus surgery if balloon sinuplasty is not sufficient.
Ideal candidates are those with chronic sinusitis not responsive to medical treatments, but without extensive nasal polyps or structural issues like severe septal deviation. A thorough evaluation by an ENT specialist, including imaging studies like CT scans, helps determine eligibility.
For many patients, the results of balloon sinuplasty are long-lasting. However, the effectiveness can vary depending on the severity of the sinus disease and patient compliance with follow-up care. Ongoing sinus hygiene and avoidance of allergens or irritants are important for maintaining results.
