What is ERCP and Why is it Done?

ERCP is a specialized endoscopic technique used to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder. It combines endoscopy with fluoroscopic imaging to allow doctors to view the bile and pancreatic ducts, identify blockages or stones, and perform treatments like stenting or dilation in the same session.

How the ERCP Procedure is Performed

During ERCP, the doctor inserts a thin, flexible endoscope through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the duodenum. A small tube (catheter) is passed through the scope to inject contrast dye into the bile and pancreatic ducts. X-rays are taken to locate any abnormalities, and treatment is performed immediately if needed.

Common Conditions Treated with ERCP

ERCP is often used to treat bile duct stones, pancreatic strictures, bile leaks, blockages due to tumors, and chronic pancreatitis. It is also performed after gallbladder surgery when complications arise or to place stents to relieve ductal obstruction.

Therapeutic Advantages of ERCP

Unlike diagnostic-only endoscopies, ERCP allows both diagnosis and treatment in a single procedure. It can be life-saving in cases of obstructive jaundice or acute cholangitis and avoids the need for open surgery in many cases. Therapeutic ERCP includes stone removal, stenting, balloon dilation, and drainage.

Who is the Right Candidate for ERCP?

ERCP is typically recommended when imaging tests like ultrasound, CT, or MRI show abnormalities in the ducts or when symptoms suggest obstruction, infection, or injury to the bile or pancreatic ducts. It is suitable for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in adults and selected pediatric cases.

Recovery and Post-Procedure Care

After the ERCP, patients are monitored for a few hours. Some mild throat discomfort or bloating may occur. Most individuals can go home the same day unless complications arise. Doctors provide diet and medication advice, and a follow-up may be scheduled to check recovery or stent position.
