1 DaysEndoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with stenting merges endoscopy and fluoroscopy to both diagnose and treat conditions of the bile and pancreatic ducts. The stenting portion involves placing a small tube to relieve obstruction and restore normal fluid flow.
This procedure is often recommended for conditions like bile duct stones, strictures (narrowing), tumors, or post-surgical complications. The stent allows bile or pancreatic juice to bypass the blockage, preventing infection and organ damage.
The procedure begins with sedation, followed by the insertion of an endoscope through the mouth into the duodenum. A contrast dye outlines the ducts, after which a plastic or metal stent is placed to open blocked channels.

Plastic stents are often used for short-term drainage, typically in benign conditions, while self-expanding metal stents are preferred in malignant obstructions due to their durability and wider diameter.
The procedure usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. Recovery is relatively quick, with most patients going home the same day or after brief observation, depending on the complexity of the intervention.
Though generally safe, ERCP with stenting may lead to complications such as pancreatitis, infection (cholangitis), bleeding, or rarely, perforation. Monitoring for abdominal pain, fever, or vomiting post-procedure is important.
