1 - 2 daysStomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, occurs when abnormal cells in the stomach lining grow uncontrollably. It often develops slowly over years and may go unnoticed until more advanced stages. Diagnosis typically involves upper endoscopy, biopsy, imaging scans, and blood tests to determine the type, location, and stage of the cancer.
Stomach cancer treatment depends on the stage, location, and whether it has spread. Common approaches include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Early-stage cancers may be treated with surgery alone, while advanced stages often require a combination of therapies for better outcomes.
Surgery is the most effective treatment for early-stage stomach cancer and aims to remove all cancerous tissue. Procedures include subtotal gastrectomy (removal of part of the stomach) or total gastrectomy (removal of the entire stomach). Lymph nodes are often removed as well to prevent further spread of cancer.
Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancer cells and may be given before surgery (neoadjuvant) to shrink tumors or after surgery (adjuvant) to kill any remaining cells. In advanced stages, chemotherapy may also be used as a primary treatment to slow cancer growth and manage symptoms.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to target and destroy cancer cells. It is often combined with chemotherapy to enhance effectiveness. Radiation may be used before or after surgery, or to relieve symptoms such as pain, bleeding, or difficulty eating in cases of advanced stomach cancer.
Nutritional care is critical during and after treatment, especially for patients who’ve had part or all of their stomach removed. A nutritionist may recommend smaller, more frequent meals and dietary supplements to maintain weight and prevent deficiencies. Proper nutrition supports healing, strengthens immunity, and improves treatment tolerance.
After treatment, regular follow-up visits help monitor for recurrence and manage long-term side effects. Follow-ups may include physical exams, blood tests, endoscopy, or imaging studies. Patients are also guided on diet, lifestyle changes, and emotional support, which are all essential for a full recovery and improved quality of life.
