1 DaysEMR is a minimally invasive technique used to remove precancerous or early-stage cancerous lesions from the digestive tract lining, especially in the esophagus, stomach, or colon, using an endoscope—without open surgery.
EMR is best suited for individuals with early-stage gastrointestinal tumors or large benign polyps that can’t be removed during a routine endoscopy. It’s often recommended for patients who wish to avoid major surgery but still need effective treatment.
Clinical studies show that EMR has a high success rate, especially for early GI cancers. With proper case selection and expert endoscopists, EMR can offer long-lasting results and reduce the chances of cancer progression or recurrence.

During EMR, the endoscope is inserted into the GI tract. A saline solution is injected beneath the lesion to lift it from the deeper layers. Then, the raised lesion is snared and removed safely without damaging healthy tissue.
The EMR procedure takes 30 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on complexity. Patients are generally discharged the same day, with observation for a few hours. Normal diet resumes gradually, often starting within 24 hours.
While both are endoscopic treatments, EMR is generally faster and simpler, best for smaller or flatter lesions. ESD, on the other hand, is used for larger, deeper, or complex lesions, but it requires more time and skill. EMR is often the first-line approach for many early cases.
